Suhail Naqshbandi’s portrait of Noor — the Kashmiri artist and musician — is hauntingly beautiful. The use of shadow and light is so deliberate, it almost feels like a conversation between what’s seen and what’s held back. Noor’s figure, partly cloaked in darkness, is brought to life through soft strokes and deep contrasts, as if emerging from silence itself.The silhouette of the rabab is especially striking — elegant, strong, unmistakable. It curves across the painting like a spine, grounding everything. You can sense the weight of tradition in it, but also something deeply personal. Suhail has captured more than a musician here — he’s captured a mood, a memory, a whole history woven into Noor’s stance and expression.
There’s a quiet dignity to the whole piece. It doesn’t try to explain itself or make a grand statement — it just is. And that’s what makes it so powerful. You can feel the artist’s deep respect for his subject, and for the culture they both come from.
This painting now hangs in my home, and every time I pass by it, I pause. It speaks without saying a word — and I’m so grateful to have it.
