As an artist, I've noticed a theme running through my work—a subconscious pull toward painting water. Whether it's the serene stillness of a lake or the gentle flow of a river, Kashmir's waterbodies have become a central subject in my watercolors. This realization came to me while reflecting on my recent paintings, and it feels like a genuine and organic part of my artistic identity. I hope this post inspires you to explore your own creative flow and perhaps even try painting Kashmir's waters yourself.
Nigeen Lake: A Watercolorist's Paradise
The inspiration for a large part of my work comes from the stunning
Nigeen Lake, a tranquil gem located in the heart of Srinagar. The lake's name literally means "gem," and it truly lives up to its name. It's a haven for nature lovers and a popular spot for tourists seeking serenity. As an artist, I appreciate that it's a peaceful setting, less crowded than other lakes, which makes it perfect for capturing on canvas.
The lake itself is over 1.7 miles long and is flanked by beautiful willow and poplar trees. On its western banks are old, elevated gardens with even older almond trees. When spring arrives, these almond trees blossom with delicate pink flowers, a truly mesmerizing sight. A particular highlight for any painter is the view of the majestic Zabarwan mountain range from these gardens, and their beautiful reflection in the lake.
The western side of the lake is also lined with majestic Chinar trees, and I'm fascinated by how these trees vividly change colors with the seasons. Autumn, when their leaves turn a brilliant orange, is the best time to witness this vibrant display. This adds to the abundant charm of the lake, truly making it seem like a gem.
Painting the Experience and Mastering Reflections
My artistic process is deeply intertwined with the experience of the location itself. I'm not just painting a scene; I'm trying to capture the feeling of being there. One of the most unique experiences Nigeen Lake offers is the option to stay in a houseboat, which provides a travel experience to cherish for a lifetime. And, of course, a ride on a traditional
Shikara boat amidst the serene nature is an absolute must.
My focus on water allows me to play with light and reflection in my paintings, using a variety of watercolors to bring the scene to life. Capturing these moments, from the centuries-old gardens to the charming houseboats and their reflections, is my way of sharing the essence of Kashmir's waters.
From Dal Lake to the Jhelum: A Connected Canvas
While Nigeen Lake is a primary inspiration, my artistic flow extends to other iconic waterbodies in the region. The interconnectedness of Dal Lake and the Jhelum River forms a larger canvas for me. I find the vibrant life and activity on Dal Lake a powerful contrast to the tranquility of Nigeen. The Jhelum River, a lifeline flowing through the heart of the city, offers its own unique reflections and moods, from a gentle current to the bustling reflections of urban life.
My ongoing series on Kashmir's waters has taught me that my artistic focus is not a coincidence. It’s a reflection of my subconscious connection to my surroundings. The stillness, the reflections, and the vibrant life that water supports inspire me to create. I've realized that the most compelling art often comes from the subjects that naturally draw us in. I encourage all artists to pay attention to these subconscious pulls—they might just be your true artistic calling. If you're looking for watercolor tutorials or inspiration for your next landscape painting, remember to look to the subjects that you feel most connected to.
